Author and scholar. A native of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, he was for many years the editor of the John Langdon Sibley Series of Harvard University biographies (including famous Indians, lawyers, Revolutionary Leaders, college presidents, and more), that he started in 1930. The biographies were started by Sibley in 1859 and continued until his death in 1885. Shipton was also a Harvard University librarian, the University's Custodian of Archives, and Director of the American Antiquarian Society. His own writing's include, "New England Life In the Eighteenth Century." He died in 1973 at the age of 71.
