The second oldest of six children, Mrs. Porter was born to Robert Cochran and Elizabeth Gourley Emanuel on July 25, 1935 in Reidsville, North Carolina.
She attended Bethel College in Hopkinsville, Kentucky and married John William Porter on September 5, 1954. Mrs. Porter worked at Gray’s Drug Store in Guthrie, Kentucky and retired from Elkton Bank & Trust. A longtime member of the Guthrie First United Methodist Church, she served as Treasurer, Sunday School Superintendent and was a member of the United Methodist Women. She was a founding member of the Robert Penn Warren Birthplace Museum in Guthrie, Kentucky.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death in 1983 by her husband, John William Porter; two brothers Robert and James Emanuel and two sisters Emily McKenzie and Ann Potter. She is survived by three daughters Elizabeth “Betty" Kay Sellers (Frank Kimothy) of Destin, Florida, Brenda Lee Standard (Robert Coleman) of Elkton and Catherine Ann Fox (George Lyne) of Elkton; one brother William T. Emanuel and one sister in law Sarah T. Emanuel both of North Carolina. Also surviving are five grandchildren Emily Ann, Laura Beth, Julia Elizabeth, William Neale and Rebecca Lee and five great grandchildren McCabe, Vivienne, Laila, Reva and Benjamin.
Visitation with the Porter family will be on Saturday, August 25th from 11:00 until Memorial Service time at 1:00 at the Guthrie First United Methodist Church, 407 Park Street, Guthrie, Kentucky with Pastor Karen Franklin officiating. Inurnment will follow at the Highland Cemetery in Guthrie.
