A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in York, Pennsylvania, August 30, 1864, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 4 as a private with Co. B, 209th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 31, 1865.
After the war, Mr. Rambo became a professional photographer. By 1870 he was working as a photographer in the small town of Galena in Kent County on Maryland's Eastern Shore. In approximately 1874 he relocated to Philadelphia where the following year he opened a photographic studio. He would continue to work as a photographer in Philadelphia until close to his death in 1912.
He married Levina Baker and fathered Elizabeth B. (b. 11/01//79). In 1880, he lived in Philadelphia at 743 N. 41st St. where he died from "chronic valvular disease of heart" with "chronic nephritis" a contributing factor.
