He was a carpenter, and was also mentioned in some records as a ship's carpenter. His wife Mary Sylvia Potter was of the Potter family of Westport.

He and Mary first lived in Fairhaven and for a short time around 1857 they moved to Abington when he was working as a shipwright. They returned to Fairhaven area by 1859.
