REED, VIRGINIA ANNE
ENS US NAVY
WORLD WAR II

June 2, 1921 - October 26, 2004

SILVERTON - Virginia Anne Norquest Reed was born in Lafayette, Ind. in 1921 to Clarence and Irene Norquest. The family moved to East Moline, then to Rock Island, Ill., before she was five. Virginia recalled taking many train trips because her father worked for the railroad.

After completing nurse's training in 1942 at Lutheran Hospital School for Nurses in Moline, Ill., Virginia moved to Hollywood, Calif. to live with her older sister, Grace. She worked at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital and for a private practice in Beverly Hills. She was commissioned a Navy ensign and assigned to the Naval Hospital at Long Beach, where she met Donald Reed, who had just returned from a tour of duty to New Zealand and Australia.

Don and Virginia were married in 1944. Daughter Vicki was born in Long Beach in 1945. When the war was over, Don and Virginia moved to Forest Grove, Ore., where Don attended Pacific University and played baseball. Son, Jim was born in Portland in 1946.

After living in Jefferson and Hubbard, Don and Virginia settled in Silverton in 1954. Virginia worked at Silverton Hospital and did special home nursing locally. In about 1959 she started working with Doctor Pettit and was his office nurse. She retired together with Dr. Pettit in 1989.

Virginia was a member of Silverton United Methodist Church and BPW. For many years, she enjoyed camping and fishing with friends and family around Oregon, in Canada, and at their property at Lobster Creek. She traveled widely with her sister, Grace after Don's death in 1985, including 10 trips to Japan to visit her son, Jim. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a special joy to her.

Virginia leaves a loving family: children, Victoria Anne Appleman of Molalla and James Franklin Reed of San Jose, Calif.; four grandchildren, Kirk Appleman, Angela Deckelmann, Lora Dougherty, and Kristen Reed; five great-grandchildren, Emily and Sara Appleman, Max and Kelsey Deckelmann and Alisa Dougherty; and half sister, Jane Schafer of Schuylkill Haven, Penn. She will be loved, remembered and missed by all.

A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m., on Fri., Oct. 29, at Willamette National Cemetery. Contributions may be made to Silverton United Methodist Church. Arrangements are by Unger Funeral Chapel.
