Born July 24, 1918, in Olin, to Kenneth and Nina Switzer Miller, he married Colleen E. Cutts on June 15, 1939, in Cedar Rapids. He served with the Army Air Corps during World War II. A former sales representative in this area for Service Envelope of Kansas City, he later formed his own company, Premier Paper Products, which he operated until his retirement due to illness in 1989. He was a longtime member of St. John's Episcopal Church and had served the church in many areas over the years.

He was a member of Crescent Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, El Kahir Shrine and a lifetime member of the Elks and Moose lodges. Gale loved to fly, loved music and travel, and played trumpet in the El Kahir Shrine Band for many years.
