Edna Helen Simmons was born to Oliver Simmons, an Electrical engineer and Ada Gray a school teacher October 14 1893 in Springfield Illinois. In 1906 Edna's father moved to Oakland California. At the young age of 12 Edna witnessed the devastation of the 1906 Great San Francisco Earthquake, it left a lasting impression on her for her whole life.
Edna married Paul Sumner Bean Sr. a rancher from Sonoma county California in 1915. Edna gave birth to 7 children, 4 children were 2 sets of twins.
Edna worked as librarian for the University of California- Berkeley and North Douglas School District Drain, Or. She was an avid bibliophile.
