Tall, slender, 19-year old Milton Harvey Allen went to register for the WWI draft. He had blue eyes and dark brown hair. At the time, he was living in Rural Sheridan, Wyoming (Rural Free Delivery #2), and working as a brakeman for a railway.

He listed his mother, Mrs. Sarah Allen, as his nearest relative, and she had the same rural address as he. His WWI registration does not list his birth place--only the date.

He did become a veteran of World War I. After the war, on October 7, 1922, Milton Harvey Allen married Mary Elizabeth Dugdale (coming from Omaha, Nebraska) in St. Louis, Missouri.

The 1930 US Census shows Milton and Mary living at 817 Fulton St., in Rapid City, South Dakota.

Milton H. Allen, b. IA, age 31, traveling salesman, WWI veteran, head
Mary E. Allen, b. Nebraska, age 30, wife
Milton H. Allen, b. Nebraska, age 6, son
Leo P. Allen, b. Nebraska, age 5, son
Mary J. Allen, b. SD, age 2 yrs, 7 mos, daughter
James T. Allen, b. Nebraska, age 5 months, son

Ten years later, in 1940, the US Census asked additional questions, such as schooling, and whether (because of the Great Depression) people were living in the same house in 1935. In 1935, the Allens had been living in Sydney, Nebraska.

The Allens now lived at 1022 4th Avenue, Nebraska City, Nebraska. Milton (Melton, transcription error), was 41, and had finished 3 years of college (unusual in those days). He sold farm implements. All four children were still at home, living with them.
