The only son of Samuel and Margaret (Myers) Plunkett, George was born during the family's short residence in Decatur County, Indiana. He assisted his father with the family farm in Grant Co., KY before enlisting in Co. "G," 18th KY Infantry of the Union Army during the War of the Rebellion.

George was captured at Chickamanga, GA in September of 1863 and sent to Libby Prison in Richmond, VA. Becoming ill in early 1864, he was removed to a hospital in Danville, VA where he died five weeks later. He was buried in Danville National Cemetery. George never married.

Sadly, George's father, Samuel, had been mortally wounded at the first battle of Cynthiana, KY in July, 1862.
