He re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer October 19, 1863, at Key West, Florida, promoted to sergeant October 29, 1864, and honorably discharged with his company December 25, 1865, at Charleston, South Carolina.
He married Emma Margaret Sheets April 6, 1873, in Duncannon, Perry County, and fathered Frances E. (b. ?), Walter Brown (b. 05/14/74), Charles Augustus (b. 11/18/74), Annie Eliza (b. 04/22/78 - married David Conklin), Catharine Buehler (b. 03/22/85), Harry Buehler (b. 03/22/85), Marie M. (b. 10/20/88), and Daniel Bacon (b. 05/21/90). On July 9, 1909, he entered the soldiers' home at Johnson City, Tennessee, but those records do not indicate why he was in Atlantic City, New Jersey, at the time of his death.
