Bertha M. Lien was born on April 13, 1909, in a house her father built near Palmer, Iowa. She was the daughter of Albert and Jennie (Himan) Anderson. Bertha was baptized as an infant, and was later confirmed in her faith as a youth. She received her education in Garvin, Minnesota and attended her first two years of high school there. Bertha then attended the high school in Tracy, Minnesota for her junior and senior year. After graduation, she attended Normal Teacher’s Training and received a teaching certificate. In 1926, Bertha began teaching grades 1- 8 in Tracy.
On November 23, 1934, Bertha was united in marriage to Lloyd Lien in Flandreau, South Dakota. This marriage was blessed with three children, David, Donald and Duane. Sadly, David passed away in 1937, at the age of two years. Bertha and Lloyd resided and farmed in Tyler, Minnesota and then in Baliton, Minnesota, until 1966, when they moved to Hutchinson, Minnesota. They shared 55 years of marriage, until Lloyd passed away on January 12, 1989.
In addition to being a loving homemaker and mother, Bertha held employment at Braun’s Clothing Store in Hutchinson. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Hutchinson, where she served as a Sunday School Teacher and Sunday School Superintendent.
Bertha enjoyed sewing, crafting, quilting and painting. She was very creative and was always working on some sort of project. Bertha especially enjoyed the time she spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
When Bertha needed assistance with her daily care, she became a resident of the Presbyterian Home in Spring Park, Minnesota in November of 2009. She passed away there on Monday, September 27, 2010, at the age of 101 years.
