A Leader Fallen
Death Of Former County Commissioner, Isaac Bushong
Isaac Bushong, Esq., an old and widely known resident, died at his home at Bushong's Mill, near Bird-in-Hand, on Thursday night of last week after a brief illness of pneumonia in the seventy-seventh year of his age. Squire Bushong, as he was familiarly known for many years, had long been a recognized leader in business affairs, in politics and in church matters in the community in which he resided. Until recent years he had been a farmer by occupation, and for many years served as school director and Justice of the Peace in Upper Leacock township, and was also a Director of the Lancaster County Mutual Fire Insurance Company up to the time of his death. He served as an Elder in Heller's Reformed Church for almost thirty years and previously served as Deacon for a time. He was also Treasurer of the congregation for many years and was a frequent attendant at the meetings of Classis and Synod, as the presentative of his congregation. He also was county commissioner during the term of 1879-81. All his positions of trust he filled with fidelity and fair ability, and his good judgment, uprightness, progressivences, and quiet easy demeanor gave him much influence for good. Deceased is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Annie Gockley, of Lancaster, and Mrs. Peter Stauffer, of Witmer. Three sons and one daughter, also survive, as follows: George and Martin of Philadelphia, T. Newton, of Bird-in-Hand, and Annie M. of Lancaster. His wife died about ten years ago. The funeral of the deceased was held on Sunday afternoon and was attended by a very large concourse of relatives and friends. The interment was made at Heller's church.
