David attended school until age 18 and worked his fathers farm until age 22. His father gave him and one other son (believe it to be Samuel) each 80 acres. This was timber land and only had 3 acres cleared. His possessions included a horse, bridle and saddle.
At the time of his marriage, Mr. Bell had no home, so rented a log cabin in which they lived the first 5 years of their married life. During this time he suffered many hardships and privations.
In 1857, in company with his father-in-law, he came to DeWitt Co, IL and being well pleased with the country purchased 80 acres of prairie land on section 28 Creek Twp on which he raised a small crop the first year. In the fall, after, harvest, he returned to Ohio to his wife who had seen to the planting and harvesting of a crop on their Ohio farm. They spent the winter in Ohio and in the Spring of 1858 he sold his Ohio property and brought his family to DeWitt, IL. They lived in a small log house which he rented wile he built a 16x16 dwelling with additional pantry on their property. When he purchased the property there were no shade trees nor any cultivated land. He set out many trees which now throw grateful shade about the home and add much to the beauty of the place. His residence now measures (the front side) 30 feet by 18 feet and is two stories tall, while the rear is 40x16 which includes the original structure.
David and his wife Rebecca contributed to the erection of Center Chapel Church near their home and have aided in building three school houses. They stand high in the community where they have so long resided.
David owned a 160 acre farm on section 28 in Creek Twp, DeWitt Co, IL. He was a Republican. He was the Road Commissioner, Township Treasurer and School Director.
