Alma Whitely Lowe, 93, of St. George, Utah passed away on October 4th, 2014, in the Dixie Regional Medical Center. He was born on December 4, 1920 in Parowan, Utah to Ernest and Genevieve Ward Lowe.

He lived on a farm in Summit, Utah until first grade when his family moved to a home in Parowan. It was there in Parowan that he finished his elementary and secondary education graduating from Parowan High School in 1939.

He was the sixth child of eleven. He had 5 sisters and 5 brothers. Florence Beaumont (deceased), Lynn (deceased), Alberta Limb (deceased), Ilene Blake (deceased), Howard (deceased), Ward (deceased), Beatrice Willden (deceased), Vera Waters of Henderson, Nevada, Merrill (Mary) Lowe of Beaver, Utah, and a baby deceased at birth.

Alma was not afraid of hard work and learned to work at an early age. He started delivering newspaper when he was in elementary school making 90 cents a month. He worked with his dad on the farm. He went to California and got a job at Union Oil Company where he pumped gasoline and delivered cars to customers for a winter. Other jobs included working for Day Farms in Parowan-essential work-potatoes and hay-irrigating for $30.00-$40.00/month.

Enlisted in the draft in 1944 where he served in the army. His rank was Corporal (E-4). He fought in The Battle of the Bulge in France. He was discharged in 1946.

After he came home from serving his country, he bought a panel truck and went door to door selling non-perishable goods for a company named “Grand Union Tea Company”. He was a salesman for Wonder Bread. He married Marsetta (Mickey) Glazier on April 29th, 1947 in the St. George Temple. Their first home was in Cedar City until he bought a grocery store in Beaver which he named Alma’s Market. They owned and operated their store for 37 years. He loved the people of Beaver and especially enjoyed all the little children.

He enjoyed hard work, was a master gardener and grew award winning dahlias. He was meticulous about his yard and could be found mowing his lawn in the dark with a flashlight.

He loved dancing and singing. He stayed physically fit by riding his bicycle around town.

He lost his wife and partner Mickey in 1993.

He later married Donna Crawford and they moved to St. George. They enjoyed golfing and bowling. He participated in the Senior Games many years and won many metals. His bowling average was 179 with several 200 plus games. He was still bowling 200 games at the age of 93.

He is survived by his children, Dennis (Kayleen) Lowe, -Lorri Blanc, Bonnie (Tom) Swindlehurst, and Jeri (Paul) Filmore. One brother, Merrill (Mary) Lowe and one sister Vera Waters. He has 22 grandchildren and 41 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 10, 2014, at 1:00 p.m. At the Beaver Stake Center 1350 East 200 North. A Viewing will be held on Thursday, October 9, 2014 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and preceding the funeral from 11:00-12:30 Also at the church. Interment will be in the Mountain View Cemetery under the direction of Swindlehurst Funeral Home.
