Ft. Pierre - Wallace Newman, 73, Ft. Pierre, died Thursday, July 21, at his home. Visitation will be Monday, July 25, 5 to 7 p.m. with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Feigum-VanLith Funeral Home, Pierre. Funeral services will be Tuesday, July 26, 10 a.m., Community and Youth Involved Center, Ft. Pierre. Interment will follow at the Scotty Philip Cemetery, Ft. Pierre. Wallace Newman was born Dec. 28, 1931 in Redfield, S.D. to Clayton and Katherine "Peg" (Jesson) Newman. He grew up and attended school in Redfield, from which he then graduated. Then in 1952, he entered the Air Force returning in 1956 after being stationed all over the United States. After leaving the Air Force, Wally went to work for Chicago Bridge and Iron. In 1963, Red Compton called him to come to Fort Pierre and they started their own business, R&W Construction. They sold out in 1976, deciding they were too young to retire; they started Compton & Newman Partnership and developed what is now known as Marion's Gardens. After finishing the project, he decided to retire. Wally loved watching his geese, wild turkeys, and deer. He enjoyed playing with his grandchildren, boating, hunting, and drinking beer with his family and friends. Wally is survived by his wife Connie, Ft. Pierre; three step-children Cristi Donahoe (Ronnie), Hardy, Ark, Venon Reily, Hardy, Ark., Vincent Reily, Ft. Pierre; 6 grandchildren; two sisters Norma Sprague, Henry, Ill., Mary Pucket (Brian), Pierre; one brother Gary Newman and his wife Connie of Redfield; Red Compton, his brother-in-law and life long friend of Ft. Pierre.
