Albert "Big Al" B. Schlottmann was born on October 18, 1922 in Aloha, OR to Henry and Emma (Keehn) Schlottmann, and except for his military service, lived his entire life in Oregon, passing away September 18, 2014 in Cornelius, OR, with family at his side at the age of 91.

Al was a graduate of Benson Technical High School. Directly out of school he joined the Navy (his mother had to sign him in as he was only 17), and served honorably in the Guam, the Aleutians, and Samoan Islands. During leave in 1943, he married Sara Louise York in Vancouver, WA (they chose Vancouver because Oregon had a three-day waiting period for a civil ceremony and he was returning to service the next day). After being honorably discharged, he went to work as a choke setter for a logging company in Corvallis, but after a couple of years he began his career in the field that he had been trained for in the Navy - electrical engineering. He worked for a few years for Beaverton Service before starting A & J Electric with several co-workers. In 1971 he started A.B. Electric, eventually bringing five of his sons into the business before retiring in 1985.

In his spare time, Al enjoyed hunting and fishing, softball - he had learned to play in the Navy and pitched for the City of Portland before winning a championship in Myrtle Point with a slow-pitch team a few years later; three of his boys were on the team. He was also proud of his garden, the sunflowers and, especially, tomatoes he raised, and played golf three days a week for many years; with his brother Elmer, we learned, he would golf every weekend while pretending to be chopping wood. He moved to Rock Creek so he would get the opportunity to live on a golf course - the Rock Creek Country Club - but they complained when he chose to play the four holes nearest to his home without checking in, so he moved his golf game back to Vernonia and other courses. He also belonged to the Sunset Grove and Forest Hill Golf Clubs, and accomplished the feat of scoring two holes-in-one on the very same hole. With Sara he enjoyed bowling (we think she was better than he was!) and clam digging near their beach house in Manzanita.

Mr. Schlottmann was preceded in death by his wife Sara in 2004, by their son Michael in 1993, and by his brothers Raymond, Elmer, and William.

He will be missed by a daughter, Shari Poehler, and five sons, Jim, Gary, Charles, Larry, and John Schlottmann. Also surviving him are nineteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Wednesday, September 24 at Pegg, Paxson and Springer Funeral Chapel, 4675 SW Watson Avenue in Beaverton. A private graveside ceremony with military honors will be held after the reception. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer's Association would be greatly appreciated by Al's family.
