James Lowell Allen, 91 of Salida, died May 26, 2009, at Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center in Salida.

He was born March 22, 1918, in Salida to Lowell R. and Anna Mae (Bear) Allen.

Mr. Allen married Eleanor Bryant Sept. 19, 1937, in Buena Vista. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Salida Elks Lodge No. 808, Salida Masonic Lodge No. 57 AF&AM and Salida Topaz Chapter No. 27 Order of Eastern Star, where he was a past Worthy Patron.

He was a past member of Salida Chapter No. 17, Royal Arch Masons; Salida Council No. 20, Cryptic Masons; Salida Comandra No. 17, Knights Templar, past member of Al Kaly Shrine and past member of Mon-Ark Shrine.

He was a life member of United Transportation Union.

Mr. Allen worked 38 years for the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad, retiring in 1979. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gathering wood, being outdoors and working in his shop.

Involvement in civic clubs were a big part of the life of he and his wife after retirement.

Mr. Allen was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Eleanor Allen; sisters, Lottie Bisbee, Dorothy Smyth, Mabel Wiles and Lucille Thompson.

Survivors include sons, Robert Allen of Las Vegas, Nev.; Edward Allen of Denver, Richard (Alice) of Las Vegas; Dennis (Marilyn) Allen of Phoenix, Ariz., and Bryan Allen of Denver; 14 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services are set for 11:30 a.m. May 30, 2009, at Salida United Methodist Church.
