It has been a long time, but if you are still out there: James Jefferson Hicks is my 2nd great grandfather. His father was Thomas Jefferson Hicks, b. 1812 in Humphries, TN and died about 1898 in Benton Co., TN. His mother was Sarah Edwards, born about 1813 in North Carolina. Thomas' father's name was Jacob Hicks b.28 April 1789 in NC and died 6 Aug 1866 in Benton Co., TN Jacob Hicks married Mary Polly Lewis on 6 Dec 1808 in Sumner, TN. Mary was born 8 May 1791 and died 23 Aug 1865 in Benton, TN. The family story is that Jacob was a Cherokee Indian on the Trail of Tears. He supposedly fell ill on the trail and was left behind. He was taken in by someone and recovered, then went to retrieve his family and brought them back to TN. I don't have documentation of this, and am interested in learning more if anyone has info.
