FUNERAL SERVICES FOR LYDIA J. MERRITT CONDUCTED JUNE 9TH

Funeral services for Mrs. John (Lydia J.) Merritt, were conducted on Sunday afternoon, June 9, 1963, from the Christian Church in Burwell. Mr. Dean Donner, minister, officiated. The selection, "In The Garden", "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Beyond The Sunset", were sung by Edna Mae Hoppes and Virginia Olcott; Iva Helmkamp, accompanist. Pallbearers were Ed Mach, Floyd Cone, Aubry Scofield, Victor Zalud, Earl Scofield and Lloyd Britton. Interment was made in Cottonwood Cemetery, Burwell, Nebraska.

OBITUARY

Lydia Johanna Merritt, daughter of Adam and Tracy Benker, was born May 14, 1905 at Rosemont, Nebraska, and departed this life June 3, 1963 at the Community Memorial Hospital in McCall, Idaho, at the age of 58 years and 20 days.

At the age of 5 she moved, with her parents, to a farm in Sedgewick County, Colorado, where she attended school and grew to womanhood.

On August 18, 1926, she was united in marriage to John Merritt of Julesburg, Colorado, and to this union five children were born. shortly after their marriage they moved to a farm near Valparaiso, Nebraska. Later they made their home at Lincoln for a number of years.

In 1938 they moved to a farm near Burwell, Nebraska, on which they lived several years. They then moved to Loup City, Nebraska.

In 1955 the family moved to Riggins, Idaho, where she had lived until her death, except for the past two months which were spent in the hospital at McCall, Idaho.

As a child she was baptized in the Lutheran Church, and later became a member of the Methodist Church, which she attended as often as possible. Mrs. Merritt and her husband helped organize and were charter members of the Salmon River Community Church at Riggins, Idaho. She had also been a member of the Rebecca Lodge.

She leaves to mourn her demise her husband and four sons, Wayne and Loyd of Whitebird, Idaho, Mervin of Riggins, Idaho, Lyle stationed with the Navy at Oak Harbor, Washington; one daughter, Mrs. Shirley Caufield of Billings, Montana; and eleven grandchildren. There are also three brothers, Henry of Humansville, Missouri, William and Albert of Julesburg, Colorado, and her nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Merritt was a loyal wife and mother. Her life was one of devotion to her home and family. She was quiet and unassuming. During her illness she was never heard to complain. She did not question her lot, but had great faith and courage until the end. she will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
