Alice Beckenbach was a fixture at the Rivera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, California. Tennis was her passion and she became a nationally ranked player in her 70s and 80s. A lifetime pianist and classical music fan, she attended concerts countywide. She was politically active and was president of the Santa Monica League of Women Voters. She was an avid gardener and traveled six continents.

She had a lifelong love affair with mathematics. Her father, brother, two sons and both husbands all became chairmen of mathematics departments - her first husband at Princeton and her second husband at UCLA. She was a mathematics major at Northwestern University, and when she moved to Los Angeles in 1960, she worked as a math editor at the RAND Corporation. For 70 years, she never missed the annual national meeting of mathematicians. To her friends and family, her spirit endures on the tennis court, in the concert hall, and where mathematicians gather.
