Death Takes Bishop Birney: Pasadenan had Served the Church for Many Years

Pasadena- Bishop Lauress J. Birney, Methodist Episcopal Church leader and former dean of Boston University School of Theology, died today at his residence, 200 Chautauqua Dr. He was 65 years of age. His death culiminated from a series of heart attacks which caused his retirement in 1932.

In 1920 at his own request, Bishop Birney was sent to China where he was in charge of the central district for his church. In 1927, during uprisings, his home was headquarters for scores of refugees. In his earlier life, he served as a pastor of churches in Newton Center, Hyde Park and Worchester, Mass.

Born in Dennison, Ohio the noted churchman held honorary degrees from many colleges and universities. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and a senior trustee at Boston University.

Besides his widow, Laura Birney, he leaves a daughter, Miss Dorothy Birney of New York City. Funeral arrangements announced by Turner and Stevens Co. following word from the daughter. (publishe in The L.A. Times, May 11, 1937)

Lauress J. Birney was born on Sept. 11, 1871 to Nelson A. and Harriet (Haverfield) Birney in Dennison, Ohio. He grew up as a Methodist. He received his education at Scio College and Boston University School of Theology.

He married Laura Close Sept. 8, 1896 in Belmont county, Ohio.

He graduated from the Boston University School of Theology in 1899.

He worked for 8 years as a pastor in churches in Plainfield, Ohio and Newton, Hyde Park and Worchester, Massachussetts. He received honorary degrees of doctorate of divinity from Scio College and Wesleyan College.

He returned to Boston in 1911 to serve as Dean of the School of Theology for nine years, where he was also a trustee. While serving in that position, he was consecrated as a Bishop in 1920.

Bishop Birney loved China and he and his wife served as missionaries there for 12 years. He incurred a prolonged illness in Hong Kong about 5 years before he died, culminating in a series of heart attacks leading him to retire in 1932 and the condition progressed until he went home to be with the Lord, leaving this life on May 10, 1937 in Pasadena, California.
