Grietje was born in Sexbierum, Friesland, the Netherlands to Akke Jans Bierma and Marten Jilderts van Straten. She was married to Siebe Dijkstra on 19 May 1870 in the municipality of Barradeel, Friesland, the Netherlands.

Grietje and Siebe were the parents of six children: son Eeltje, 1871; daughter Akke, 1878; daughter Lieuwke, 1880; daughter Elizabeth, 1882; daughter Geertje, 1885; son Marten, 1888.

Grietje passed away when the family was living in Sexbierum. It is reported that she baked breads to sell to augment the family's income; one day, as she usually did, she went out to sell her breads, even though she was suffering from a headache. She died suddenly and unexpectedly, and was buried in the cemetery at Sixtuskerk in Sexbierum.

It is traditional in the Netherlands that a cemetery plot is often rented by the family, rather than purchased. After the rental period, the memorial markers are destroyed and the remains are reinterred in a mass grave. This was the case for Grietje Dijkstra; consequently there is no marker for her in the Sixtuskerk Cemetery in the Netherlands. When her great-grandchildren purchased a memorial for Siebe Dijkstra who is buried at West Lawn Cemetery, Orange City, Iowa, Grietje's information was added to the back of Siebe's stone. So, even though she is not buried at West Lawn Cemetery, her memory is consecrated there.
