Robert L. Marshall, 72, of Le Mars, Iowa, formerly of Hawarden, died Monday, July 27, 1998, at The Abbey in Le Mars.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Porter-Dow Funeral Home in Hawarden, with the Rev. Dean Shelly of United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery, Le Mars. Visitation will be Wednesday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mr. Marshall was born Nov. 25, 1925, Union County in South Dakota, the son of Chester and Sarah (Henry) Marshall.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1946 to 1948 in Korea and Japan.

He married Ruby Diercksen on April 27, 1952, in Hawarden. The couple farmed on the family farm until moving into Hawarden in 1956. He was employed at several gas stations and then as a mechanic at McCarthy Implement. He retired in 1969. He entered The Abbey in December 1988.

He was a member of United Methodist Church and the America Legion in Le Mars.

Survivors include his wife; three sons and their wives, James and Leslie of Brawley, Calif., Reed and Julie of Cleghorn, Iowa, and Bart and Lorraine of Hawarden; a daughter, Barbara DeVries of Hawarden; a brother and his wife, Russell and Edna of Ireton, Iowa; a sister, Hilda Cain of Sioux City; and nine grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Gloria Jean; five brothers, Roy, Sam, Milton, John and Herbert; and two sisters, Florence Storrs and Beulah McKee.
