Violet Marie Mitchell died Aug. 1 at Witham Memorial Hospital in Lebanon. She was 78. Born Nov. 30, 1921, in Montgomery County, she was a daughter of William Sikes and Leona Ford. She married Durbin Mitchell in Thorntown on March 22, 1947.

Mrs. Mitchell graduated from Thorntown High School in 1940 and had worked for a time at Witham Memorial Hospital. Throughout her marriage she had been a homemaker and had assisted with the family farming operation. She was a member of the Advance Community Christian Church, Modern Maids Home Ec Club and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include sons, Bill Mitchell of Mooresville and David Mitchell of Jamestown; daughters Mrs. Rick (Carolyn) Koontz of Thorntown, Mrs. Steve (Sandy) Johnson of Jamestown and Mrs. Benny (Linda Lou) Jones of Gadsen; sisters Hazel Anderson of Lebanon, Grace Scering of Thorntown and Thelma Theobald of Thorntown; seven grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death was a son, Keith; a daughter, Debra; and a sister, Marjorie Galvin.

Services were held Friday at the Porter Funeral Home in Jamestown with the Rev. Don Thie officiating. Interment was in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Jamestown.
