Mrs. Gladys Weaver Callahan, 81, of Lanett died Friday, July 20, 2001 at St. Francis Hospital in Columbus, Ga.

Funeral services were held Sunday, July 22 at 3 p.m. (EDT) at McCarthy Funeral Home Chapel in West Point with Dr. Russell Dean officiating. Burial followed in Oakwood Cemetery in Lanett.

Mrs. Callahan is survived by her husband, James Russell Callahan Sr. of Lanett; four sisters, Dell Weaver McCarley of Columbus, Thelma Weaver Pool of Five Points, Ala., Doris Weaver Pledger of Roanoke, Ala., and Joyce Weaver (Herbert) Fingerhut of Columbus; two brothers, Howard Edward (Calvin) Weaver of LaFayette and Calvin Coolidge (Doris) Weaver of Wedowee, Ala.; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Born Sept. 27, 1919 in Milltown, Ala., Mrs. Callahan was a graduate of Milltown High School, where she was valedictorian of her graduating class. She received her degree in education from Auburn University. Mrs. Callahan had been active in her church, Lanett First Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Adult Seven Loyalty Sunday School Class.

She was a long time employee of the Skinner Furniture Co. in West Point, as office manager. She worked for the City of Lanett, and later retired from the Alabama Public Schools as a teacher. She taught school at River View, East Side Elementary School and Huguley School. She was a member of the Lanett Civiette Club. She was preceded in death by her son, James R. Callahan Jr., and her brother, Robert Durrell Weaver. She was the daughter of the late Carrie Belcher Weaver and Robert Gibson Weaver.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Lanett First Baptist Church, the American Lung Association, the Arthritis Foundation or a charity of one's choice.
