RAPID CITY - Carl Martin Olson, 82, died Tuesday, March 14, at a local nursing home.

Carl was born October 28, 1923, in Madison, SD, the youngest of 12 children, to Andrew and Henrietta (Knutson) Olson.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on October 23, 1942. Private First Class Olson served in the Army Air Corps until October of 1945. During that service he received the American Theater Service Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. Carl re-enlisted in the USAF in November of 1946 and served as a Private until he received an honorable discharge in November of 1951.

After his military service Carl held many occupations in Iowa, Wyoming and South Dakota, deciding to stay and work in Rapid City in 1962.

Carl enjoyed spending time and playing with his dog Trixie. He also enjoyed making homemade soups and sharing them with his friends at his residence, West Park Apartments.

Carl is survived by three daughters, Cheryl Gilland, Gillette, WY, Carol Lindsey, Gainesville, FL, and Carla Wine, Citra, FL; a son, Terry Olson, Gillette; four step-sons, Vic Brand, Denver, CO, and Verdell Brand, Robert Brand and Harlan Brand, all of Rapid City; a step-daughter, Shirley Lewis, Rapid City; a brother, Art Olson, Palm Coast, FL; a sister, Lillian Woldt, Sioux Falls; eight granddaughters, eight grandsons, eight great-grandsons, five great-granddaughters; many nieces and nephews and his beloved dog, Trixie.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents, the love of his life Emma, seven sisters, two brothers, one son and two grandsons.

Services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 17, at the Black Hills National Cemetery with Rev. William Zandri officiating. Military honors will be provided by Rushmore VFW Post 1273 of Rapid City. A procession of family and friends will be leaving the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home at 1:15 p.m. on Friday.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Hospice of the Hills.
