Carriage driving enthusiast and widow of Chronicle of the Horse founder, Stacy B. Lloyd, died Dec. 26 at her home after a battle with cancer. She was 84.
Born in Hamburg, Germany, Mrs. Lloyd moved to the United States with her mother when she was 8. During World War II, Mrs. Lloyd worked for the American Red Cross in Washington, D.C., and was later involved in many local organizations including the Clarke County (VA) Visiting Nurses Association, Help With Housing and the Clarke County Humane Foundation. She was also instrumental in the creation of a new county animal shelter.
In addition to her work with local organizations, Mrs. Lloyd also taught at Gerty Watkins’ kindergarten and Blue Ridge Country Day School in Millwood. Later she established a bookstore and worked at World Wide Travel, both in Winchester, Va.
After marrying Mr. Lloyd in 1981, the couple spent a great deal of time carriage driving both in Virginia and on Mt. Desert Island, Maine, where they spent summers. Mrs. Lloyd fox hunted with the Blue Ridge Hunt in her youth and in later years enjoyed following the Nantucket-Treweryn Beagles with her beloved Pomeranian, Brandy.
Mrs. Lloyd is survived by her cousins W. Bell Watkins, Jr., Virginia Watkins Mitchell, Constance Huested, Virginia Page Mitchell, Diana Watkins White, Virginia S. Watkins, William B. Watkins III and Frazer W. Watkins and their families.
