CJK was the son of Fred L. & Stella Covert Kilbourne. Father Fred died at 25 years old, leaving 1 year old CJK and his sister Esther aged 3 without a father. Stella worked to support her family and remained a widow for 26 years, She moved her family to Rochester and Camden, Ny to be near her family. CJK lived in Rome, NY when he left in 1905 for Springfield (Mass) College. He graduated in 1909 as a Physical Education instructor. As a side note, Charles was a student of or knew James Nasmith, the inventor of basket-ball. Marrying in 1910 to Reba MacDaniels, they moved to Greenville, SC where he was the first YMCA Phys Ed teacher there. They had 3 children, Stella, Fred & Esther, moving back to Rome briefly, before permanently settling in Plattsburg, NY. CJK raised his family in several rented houses and AFTER his 1946 retirement purchased a home. His interests were gardening, photography and some genealogy. He died 2 days before his 90th birthday and was buried besides his wife in his father-in-law's plot. As a side note, his widowed mother married his widowed father in law a year after his own marriage.
