8/19/1861 Enlisted 44th NY Infantry Regiment,
Ellsworth Avengers
The 44th was a somewhat "elite" regiment. They drew men from all over the state of New York. There were a number of qualifications that had to be met prior to consideration.. Among them was one had to be at least 5' 9" tall, single and of good moral character.
8/30/1861 Mustered in Private, Co A, Clerk in the Quartermasters Dept.
2/23/1864 Re-enlisted as veteran, transferred to Co. C.
10/1864 Promoted to Quartermaster Sgt. of 140th NY Infantry
12/12/1864 Commissioned, not mustered, 2nd Lieut w/rank
6/3/1865 Transferred to 5th Veteran Infantry
8/21/1865 Mustered out of 5th at Harts Island, NY
Orsell was in the quartermaster's department of the 44th New York Volunteers, also known as "Ellsworth's Avengers." They saw action at Sharpsburg, Fredricksburg, Chancellorsville, Petersburg and the Wilderness campaign, because of his assignment to the quartermaster's
department he saw action in only one battle. After the war [Civil War] Orsell became connected with the Internal Revenue Office in Washington, a Position he held until his death in 1881, at the age of 46.
