Hinton Daily News and Leader, Hinton, WV. Saturday, 4 Jan 1913, page 2.
The Greenbrier Independent gives the following account of the death of Mr Branham who was very well known in Hinton: Another brave and faithful Confederate soldier has passed over the river to rest with Lee and Jackson under the shade of the trees. George W. Branham, of Ronceverte and Lewisburg, Greenbrier County WV, was found dead in his bed at his home in Ronceverte last Sunday morning, having died during the night when his family were all asleep. On Saturday Mr Branham had walked about two miles on the south side of the Greenbrier to the home of the late Mark Dolan to cry a sale for Senator Preston, Mr Dolan's executor. It was a cold, rough day, and the walk to the farm and back with the work of the day probably brought on an attack of paralysis which Dr. Parker thinks was the cause of his death.
When the great war between the States broke out in 1861, Mr Branham was among the first to enlist for service, joining and going off with the Greenbrier Rifles under command of Capt Robt F Dennis. As a member of this company which was attached to the 27th Regiment Stonewall Brigade, he served for about one year when through the influence of his brother, Capt William Branham, of General Echol's staff, he was transferred to Bryan's Battery in which he served as an excellent soldier till the was closed in 1865 - seeing much hard service and participating in many hard fought battles.
Mr Branham married Miss Margaret Dean, daughter of George Washington Dean who survives him with two children - a daughter, Miss Florence and a son, Lee Branham. He was by trade a tailor and worked at his trade many years here and at Ronceverte. Whilst a resident of Lewisburg he served one term as Mayor. He died in his 73rd year. His body was laid to repose in Riverview cemetery, Ronceverte, Tuesday morning after a funeral service conducted by his pastor, Rev W M Compton, of the M E Church, South, of which he was a member. Theodore Dean of Ohio, Mrs Kate Williams, of Alexandria, Va, and J Richard Dyche, of Pineville, Ky, came to attend the funeral. Contributor: FG# 48825891.
