Thomas Anno "Tom" Bandstra, 51, of Chattanooga, died on Wednesday, March 8, 2006, as a result of an automobile accident in Jacksonville, N.C.

He was born in Des Moines, Iowa, on July 7, 1954, the son of the late Bert A. Bandstra and Tresa Van Wyngarden Bandstra. He attended Drake University, and graduated from the University of Iowa with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

He started his career as a Federal Reserve Bank auditor, then a cost accountant with International Harvester, and later accounting and national sales manager with Aqua Sleep World. He came to Chattanooga in 1988 to work for Lutheran Brotherhood as a financial consultant.

He was a sales rep at Rec Warehouse and most recently was station manager for U.S. Airways in Jacksonville, N.C. He was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE). He was also a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church where he was a lay minister, active in board work and past executive director of the congregation.

Tom was a devoted Christian and family man. His faith in God and family was most important in his life. He was active in the life of his children by participating in sports activities with them. He collected sports memorabilia and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and sports enthusiast.

Tom is survived by his wife of 22 years, Cynthia Torkelson Bandstra; son, Bert Andrew Bandstra, formerly of East Ridge, now of Iowa Falls, IA; daughter, Trisha Annette Bandstra, of East Ridge; brother, Bruce and his wife, Sue Bandstra, of Seattle, WA, and their children, Leah and Jacob Bandstra; mother and father-in-law, Arnold and Mildred Torkelson, of Gilmore City, IA; his brother and sisters-in-law, Mike and Mary Torkelson, of Flagstaff, AZ, Becky and Randy Jones, of Macon, GA, Jackie and Brad Daggy, of Belle Plain, IA, Shelly and Scott Phillips, of Pocahontas, IA, David and Joni Torkelson, of Humboldt, IA; and many nieces and nephews.

His remains will be flown to Pella, IA, his hometown, for services and interment on Wednesday.
