Residence was not listed; enlisted at Kennedy, NY, as a Quartermaster Sergeant on 26 Aug 1861, at the age of 22 years; on 31 Aug 1861, he mustered into Co. E 5th New York Cavalry.
Reenlisted on 11 February 1864.
Promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on 19 February 1864
Promoted to 1st Lieutenant on 16 May 1864
Promoted to Captain on 24 November 1864
Mustered out on 19 July 1865 in Winchester, VA, as Major.
