His surname was also spelled as "Rea" and "Rae" in various places.
On his death record, his last name was spelled as Ray.
It appears that his full name was Silas Rudolph Ray, but he was known as Rudolph.

He served in the Civil War, on the Union side, in the Indiana 83rd Infantry, Company F. He enlisted on 8-15-1862, and he served until the end of the war. (He was admitted to an old soldier's home, so he must have had military service.)

He married Ann Goodwin on 1-14-1870.

By 1900, he was living in an old soldier's home in Indiana. But he was soon sent to the Central Indiana Hospital for the Insane, where he died, in 1902.

UPDATE: His death certificate indicated that he was born in 1844, but that was probably incorrect. He was the son of Matthew Patton Rea and Sarah LaForce Blackford Rea. They were married on April 13, 1849, in Scott County, Indiana. Rudolph could not have been born in 1844 unless he was illegitimately conceived or he was conceived by Matthew Rea's previous wife before the marriage.

The 1850 Federal Census is probably the most accurate listing of his actual year of birth (He is listed as age 7 months old. The census was taken in August 1850.)

It is believed Rudolph lied about his age on multiple official recordings due to his desire to enlist during the Civil War and being much too young to do so. Rudolph apparently attempted to collect on a military pension later in life, but was denied this pension on grounds that he had been reported AWOL during the conflict. He had repeatedly affirmed to others that he had served during the Civil War over the years. His hospitalization record shows he was discharged from service with mental and physical disability, with a notation that his military record had been corrected in 1888.
