Mary Verenka Jensen was born on October 18, 1924 in Kaleland, Alberta Canada to Harry and Elizabeth "Alice" Verenka. She grew up on the family farm near Kaleland and attended Szypenitz Church and School. Mary graduated from Hairy Hill High School in 1942. Working alongside their parents, Mary, sister Vicki, and brother Mike shared the responsibilities of farm work, but also found time for sports (especially softball), family, and community gatherings.

Mary attended Alberta Business College before meeting the tall soldier in the U. S. Army Air Corps from Nebraska, USA. Mary and Harvey were married on September 22, 1945, and that fall moved to heir home in Omaha. They were blessed with two children, Lynne and Ken, and in 1954 settled into their new home in the Benson area of Omaha.

Employed by Mutual of Omaha Insurance Company, Mary was a supervisor in the accounting department. Shew was awarded the "Thinker Award" twice for creating efficient and effective ideas for improving business practices. Mary retired from Mutual in 1988.

Always practicing hospitality, Mary loved to prepare delicious meals for her family and friends. She was known for her award-winning apple pie. Our family treasures the memories and delicious Ukrainian dishes she prepared for our January 6th annual Christmas/Epiphany dinner. Mary was a thoughtful and loving woman who supported and encouraged her family through her many acts of kindness.

Other favorite activities Mary enjoyed included traveling to Canada to visit family and vacation trips with Harvey, sister, Vicki, and brother-in-law Nick to Hawaii. She loved gardening and then freezing or canning her home-grown vegetables and fruits. Mary loved to attend her children's and grandchildren's sports and school activities. Mary enjoyed singing in the church choirs throughout the years and sang in the Good Shepherd Choir and was a part of the bell choir there.
