Friends and family are mourning the loss of Sybil Lucas Rea Spiers.

Sybil was born and raised in Sacul, TX, a town that was established on part of the Lucas Ranch and named after the family that donated the land.

She passed away quietly in Jacksonville, TX on Tuesday, September 23, 2014.

Although she loved her hometown of Sacul, Sybil’s adult life found her also residing in Houston, Dallas, New York City, and eventually Jacksonville, TX.

She married Harold Dudley Rea at the age of 16 and after World War II, the couple settled in Houston because of Dud’s occupation with the Humble Oil Co. Their son, Dan Newton Rea was born while the resided in Houston.

Family life found her active in various organizations such as the D.A.R (Daughters of the American Revolution) and in various programs in the Bellaire Methodist Church and Dan’s scouting activities. A change in job assignments saw the family relocating to Dallas in the early 60’s.
A swimming accident took the life of their son, Dan in 1967 while he was attending Southwestern University in Georgetown, TX. Dud passed away in 1970 leaving Sybil to establish a new life of a single woman. She eventually gave up her Turtle Creek apartment in Dallas to move back to Sacul and spend time with her mother, Mabel Lucas, who had remained in that town most of her life as a widow.

During that time she met John B. Spiers of Jacksonville. When they married, they lived in a lake house built on Lake Jacksonville. During this time, Sybil and John developed their social contacts in the area and enjoyed the many activities a membership in the Cherokee County offered. There were dinners and dancing and numerous parties to attend including their membership in the Churn Club. All this while she kept up with family responsibilities caring for an aging mother in Sacul and her Jacksonville aunt and uncle, Ida and Danley Newton.
After inheriting the Newton home, they sold the lake property, remodeled, and moved in to the home in town. There they lead a happy married life until John Spiers was taken from her after an illness. She has remained a widow, living in Jacksonville until the time of her own passing.

Sybil is preceded in death by her parents, Gabe and Mabel Lucas; her husband Dud and son, Dan Newton Rea; a sister, Ruth Lucas Bailey; a brother, Billy Lucas; a niece, Sandra Lucas Childers; nephew, William A. Bailey, Jr.; and husband John Spiers.

She will be especially missed by her niece, Betty Bailey-Lucas, Betty’s daughter, Leah Elizabeth Cardenas, nephew, Billy Lucas II of Kilgore; cousins, Ike, Mike, and Luke Lucas; Janet Newton Mathis and close friends, Jane and Bob Chapman, Joe and Judy Angle, and Randy Gorham.

Graveside services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 29, 2014 at Resthaven Memorial Park in Jacksonville.

Services are under the direction of Autry Funeral Home in Jacksonville.

If desired, in lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in her name to your favorite charity or may be sent to Legacy Hospice of Tyler, 120 E. South Town Dr. Ste. 200 Tyler, TX 75703 or Grace Healthcare, 111 Cash St. Jacksonville , TX 75766.

A special thank you to all the wonderful people who helped care for her during her final years of life.
