He was born to Mathias and Apollonia (Gartner) Abel of Kasota, MN on December 1, 1921. Three years after graduating High School, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and served in the South Pacific during WWII. He was awarded the Purple Heart and witnessed the first American flag raising on Iwo Jima before concluding his service with occupation duty in Japan. On leave in February 1943 he married Marian Platt of Montrose, SD, and they took up residence in Rice Lake in 1957 after residing briefly in cities throughout the Midwest as he began his retail career with S.S. Kresge Company; he continued in the retail business, working as zone manager for Butler Bros/City Products, Inc. and eventually managing the Ben Franklin Store in Bloomer before retiring in 1986.
Fred is survived by his wife, Marian Abel of Rice Lake, WI; a son, Gordon Abel of New Hope, MN; 4 daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Richard Halvorsen of Minneapolis, MN, Constance Abel and Larry Brinlee of Fremont, CA, Sandra Abel of Rice Lake, WI and Lori and Irwin Norvitch of Coraopolis, PA; a daughter-in-law, Lori Christel Abel of Rice Lake, WI; 2 grandsons, Richard Abel and Brian Bradley Abel; a brother, Mathias Abel; and a sister and brother-in-law, Magdalene and Harvey Krueger of southern Minnesota. He was preceded in death by a son, Bradley Abel on August 31, 1997.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, February 27, 2006 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Dobie, WI, Father David Oberts officiating, with interment in St. Joseph Cemetery in Rice Lake, WI, where Military Rites will be accorded by the Rice Lake Veterans Center Honor Guard.
