Born Oct. 8, 1932 in Linton, he was the son of Everett and Roxie Hatton Barnard. On July 30, 1950, he married Lois Kemp Barnard.
He lived his early life in Linton and graduated from Linton-Stockton High School in 1949, attended Purdue University and graduated from Indiana Northern University with a business degree in 1974. He also held an honorary degree in packaging and handling engineering. He was involved for many years in sales with the steel industries as well as machinery sales. He was elected to the Bartholomew County School Board in 2002 and had filed to run for the Bartholomew County Council. He enjoyed wood working, was an avid reader and enjoyed telling stories to his grandchildren. He was a member of the Eagle Creek Grace Brethren Church in Indianapolis and attended Flintwood Wesleyan Church in Columbus.
Survivors include: his wife Lois Barnard of Columbus; a son James H. Barnard and his wife Cindy of Greenwood; a daughter Lorraine K. and her husband Don Coffey of Columbus; grandchildren, Kimberly A. and her husband Josh Brown of Indianapolis, Curtis P. Barnard of Terre Haute, David A. Coffey and his wife Misty of Mishawaka; and Daniel C. Coffey and his wife Tricia of Jacksonville, Fla.; and great-grandchildren, Alaina M. Coffey, Lucas A. Coffey, Kevin L. Coffey, and Jake D. Coffey.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Everett Barnard, Jr.
Funeral service was today at 11 a.m. at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home in Columbus with the Rev. Michael Myers, Pastor Ron Bridgewater and the Rev. Wesley Jones officiating. A private family burial will be at Walnut Grove Cemetery in Bloomfield.
