Mr. George Eugene (Gene) Garrett, III of Stone Mountain passed away Sunday, December 23, 2007. He was born May 29, 1962. Growing up he was an active member of the Boy Scouts and earned the rank of Eagle Scout.

Mr. Garrett graduated from the University of Georgia with an undergraduate degree in accounting. He also obtained his Masters Degree in Business Administration. He was a certified public accountant and was employed by Sun Trust Bank for over 18 years where he worked in Cost Accounting.

Mr. Garrett was an active member of Peachtree Road United Methodist Church where he served on the administrative committee. He was also a member of Toastmasters for a number of years where he served in many leadership roles and competitive presentations.

He enjoyed volunteering at every possible opportunity. Hosea Feed the Hungry, The Peachtree Road Race Support Staff and the Olympic Force were just a few of his volunteer roles. He served as a Foreign Press Liaison during the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. His personal interests included tracing his family's genealogy and reading voraciously.

For many years he was an active part of the Decatur Civic Chorus and served as treasurer of the chorus for five years. It thrilled his heart to listen to and participate in good music. Gene is now part of the Heavenly Choir.

He was preceded in death by his father, Gene Garrett, Jr. He is survived by his mother, Lattie S. Garrett of Stone Mountain,; sister, Laura Garrett of Stone Mountain; sister and brother-in-law, Beth and Ron Bar-Haim; nephews, Joshua and Caleb Bar-Haim, all four of Watkinsville; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Mr. Garrett will lie in state beginning at 10AM and services will follow at 11AM Fri, Dec 28 at Parkwood Hills Baptist Church, 4741 Covington Hwy, Decatur, GA. Rev. Charles Gardner will be leading in prayer and scripture reading. Officiating are his cousins, Rev. Winston Collins and Rev. James Garrett. Burial will be in Westview Cemetery.
