Edna Ost was born May 11, 1922, the daughter of Ben and Emma (Ruff) Ost. Edna grew up on the family farm near Fredonia, North Dakota and received her elementary education in a rural country school. She continued to live on the farm until she attended and graduated from Bismarck Beauty College in Bismarck, North Dakota. She was united in marriage to Ben Koenig on June 3, 1945. The couple settled in Kulm, North Dakota and was longtime members of the United Methodist Church. Edna worked several years as a beautician in Kulm before taking on her full-time role as a homemaker and mother to three children. After Ben's death on January 24, 1998, Edna continued to make her home in Kulm until moving to Kansas in 2010 due to failing health. Edna will be fondly remembered by family and friends alike for her wonderful cooking and baking. She was always generous in sharing her "goodies" either by hosting a coffee party or delivering them around Kulm for others to enjoy. She also enjoyed reading, sewing and helping others in any way she could.
Edna Koenig, died Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at the Pioneer Village nursing facility in Lawrence, Kansas, where she had resided for the past four years. She was 92 years old.
Survivors include three children: Nancy (Robert) Hieb of Midland, Michigan; Kathryn Martin of Lawrence, Kansas; and Tom Koenig (Angie) also of Lawrence, Kansas. Five grandchildren: Robert (Michele) Hieb, Jennifer Hieb, Grant (Ginger) Martin, Christopher Koeing and Laura (Nolan) Henderson; five great-grandchildren; Scott, Sarah, Georgia, Benjamin and Ella. She is also survived by her brother Oscar Ost, sister-in-law Viola Ost and brother-in-law Wilbert Gutschmidt, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ben, brother Edmund Ost, sister Elva Gutschmidt and son-in-law James B. Martin.
