He died in the one of the worst coal mine disaster in history, on June 30 1903, in the mining town of Hanna Wyoming. On June 30,1903,work was progressing as usual in the No. 1 Mine just south of Hanna, when an explosion tool place. There was no warning, no chance to escape the mine. The explosion was so powerful it blew timbers, masonary, coal, rock, and earth from the mine. One hundred and sixty-nine men lost their lives, over half of the male population of the town were gone. The mine was re-opened the following year, only to have it happen again 5 yrs. later.This info is from a paper handout compiled by Muriel (Crawford) Kitching, of the Hanna Historical Society, given out at the dedication ceremony of the Miner's Monument May 27, 1984. It includes all miners who gave their lives in the mines of Hanna and Carbon and the dates that they died. Sources used were local newspapers, state mining inspector reports, grave markers and personal memories and recollection of local families such as Thomas Dodd whose father was killed in the 1908 explosion.
