William D. Meredith was born February 23, 1807 in Lynchburg, Virginia. He was the first Police Chief of Jefferson City, serving from 1839-1849 and crossed the plains in 1849 when gold was discovered in California. He sold lots in Jefferson City for $2.50 each to raise money with which to make the trip to California. His sons, Ed and Henry, accompanied him on the trip which was made with ox teams. Henry died in California. William died March 28, 1857 in Jefferson City.
