Dr. Charles Brandon Chenault M.D.
Charles Brandon Chenault, 84, gifted with a sense of adventure and scientific mind, died peacefully on Tuesday, September 16, 2014 surrounded by his wife of 57 years, Emilie Kyle Chenault and family after a brief hospitalization.
Brandon was born on October 10, 1929 in Wellsville, New York to Beaumont natives Clara and Blewett Chenault. His brothers would joke that his birth was so remarkable it caused the Wall Street Crash of 1929. From this auspicious beginning, it was clear Brandon had a bright future! He grew up in Wellsville, NY the youngest son in the family of three boys. He attended Cornell University, graduated from Hobart College and earned his medical degree from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. After medical school, he served as a flight surgeon on an aircraft carrier in the U. S. Navy.
When he was young, Brandon received a subscription to National Geographic Magazine and thus began his life-long love affair with world travel and nature. He spent the rest of his life exploring everything with scientific curiosity and hitting his personal goal of visiting every continent in the world, several more than once. The family spent many happy weeks at his favorite destination on Padre Island where he shared his fascination with nature and loved combing the beach. He had a deep commitment to the preservation of nature and our natural resources.
The true essence of Brandon was in his work as an obstetrician/gynecologist. His private practice allowed him not only to treat patients, but also gave him the opportunity to conduct research to improve the reproductive health of women and work with infertile couples so they could experience the joy of parenthood. He was a founding member of one of the first free clinics in San Antonio where underserved women in the community received quality healthcare. He was also among the first obstetricians to allow fathers into the delivery room in San Antonio. Throughout his life, he worked tirelessly for Planned Parenthood and supported them in every way.
Brandon had wide variety of interests that he approached with laughter and enthusiasm, taking his whole family along for the ride. He shared the thrill of snow skiing, talent for photography, appreciation of music and the arts, and dedication to the community through his active participation in organizations including Planned Parenthood, The Nature Conservancy, the Institutional Review Board at Methodist Hospital, The Archeological Society, San Antonio Rotary Club, and The Torch Club.
Brandon was a gracious, generous and kind person. His passion for learning has inspired all of us. He was a philanthropist in the truest sense of the word and touched everyone who knew him. Above all, it was his family that held the dearest place in his heart. Many problems were solved while we worked on 1,000 piece jigsaw puzzles.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Emilie Kyle Chenault; daughter Christie Chenault Gonzalez, son-in-law Dr. Roy Gonzalez, Jr., grandsons R. Wesley and Samuel Wilkes Gonzalez; daughter Sybil Chenault, grandson Hunter Roderick Campbell; daughter Carol Chenault and son-in-law Donald 'Shark' Smith; son Brandon Brian Chenault, grandchildren Bayley and Cameron Chenault. He is also survived by his brother Bert Chenault and was preceded in death by his brother Blewett Chenault.
A graveside memorial service will be held at the Magnolia Cemetery in Beaumont, Texas on Saturday, September 20, 2014 at 10 a.m. Reception following at the Beaumont Country Club.
