LeRoy Chester Fritz, 89, of Newberg died Sept. 12.
Roy was born to John and Charlotte Fritz in Yankton. From ages 5 to 16 he was raised in the Children's Farm Home in Corvallis. He worked in the woods as a whistle punk until he joined the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, serving as a member of the 3rd Marine Division and deployed to the South Pacific.
After service in the Marine Corps, he finished high school in St. Helens. He married Patricia Lambert in July of 1949. He attended and graduated from Oregon State University and then began a long teaching career. He taught in several communities, including Lebanon, Sweet Home, Dallas and Coquille. Over the years, Roy taught many subjects, including math, driver's education and physical education. He also was a golf and wrestling coach.
He loved the outdoors — fishing, hunting, camping and going to the Oregon Coast — and shared that love with his family. Most of all, Roy had a great love of family, and devoted his life to his children and grandchildren.
Roy is survived by his wife, Pat; son, Kurt Fritz; daughters Karen Grant, Patty Zolotoff, Jan Harris and JoAnn Kingston; 10 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Bill; and sisters Dora and Irene.
