Veteran Dies in Worcester
Edward L. Jaynes Retired at 80
Worcester, May 29 -- Edward L. Jaynes, 98, one of the two surviving members of the disbanded George H. Ward post, G. A. R., once the largest post, numerically, in the country, died today at his home, 2 Clarence street, after a long illness.
He had taken part in five major engagements in the civil war, including the Battle of Gettysburg.
His death leaves only two civil war veterans in this city, George Frissell, 93, ..., the last of the old Ward post, and Eleazer Bryant, 91....
Mr. Jaynes, whose grandfathers both fought in the revolution, was born in Southbridge and was a carpenter during his youth.
He enlisted in Company F, 51st regiment in 1862.
Afer the war he was employed as a decorating wood carver by the Boston & Albany railroad at Springfield, and later carved woodwork in homes in Worcester, Springfield, Philadelphia and Cleveland.
Early in the 1870's he became a professional photographer in Spencer and maintained a studio there until he was 80 years old.
He leaves two daughters, Mrs. Florence Page of Conway, N. H., and Mrs. Irene Smith of Hartford, and three grandchildren.
His wife, Mrs. Inez (McNeil) Jaynes, died three years ago....
