F. W. Sprado Dies at 86
Frederick W. Sprado of 317 Seneca Rd., North Hornell, one of the last veterans of the Spanish American War in Steuben County, died Saturday morning at Bethesda Hospital. He was 86 years old and had been ill for the past four years.
A native of Bremen, Germany he came to this country when he was 12 years old. He settled in Sioux Falls, S.D., and was engaged in farming. He was associated with the U. S. Railway Mail Service about 40 years most recently between Salamanca and New York City on the former Erie Railroad system. He retired in 1940 as chief mail clerk.
He was a veteran of two wars, the Spanish American War when he served in the calvary, and World War l. During World War l he was instrumental in establishing and operating the first American military post office in France.
He was a memaber of Arthur H. Cunningham Post No. 440, American Legion.
Surviving is his wife, Mrs. Mabel Sowers Sprado, and 15 nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be at ll a.m. Tuesday at the Dagon Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery with full military honors.
Arthur H. Cunningham Post will hold memorial services at 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.
