Catherine "Edna" Thomas

90, Indianapolis, passed away March 21, 2014. She was the second of twelve children born to James Hester and Anna Ruby Floyd. She was born on January 26, 1924, in Smith Mills, KY, and spent most of her childhood in Uniontown, KY. Upon graduation from high school, Edna worked as a secretary at Camp Breckenridge in Morganfield, KY, and later transferred to Camp Atterbury in IN. In the summer of 1948, while working in downtown Indianapolis as a secretary, she met her future husband in the basement of her apartment building while doing laundry. After one date he promptly left for summer camp with the United States Air Force. Upon his return 6-weeks later they picked up where they left off and were married April 10, 1949. Edna was a marvelous cook and enjoyed entertaining and gathering with family and friends. She was an avid bridge player and visited the casinos frequently. Edna loved the Indianapolis Colts and more recently the Denver Broncos. IU and Purdue basketball were on her list too. If there was a ball game, Edna was on board. She took great pleasure in traveling with her husband and they visited numerous destinations including Hong Kong, Singapore, Monaco, Hawaii and Mexico, to name a few. She thoroughly enjoyed Las Vegas and they visited there often. Edna was a beautiful woman who radiated an inner beauty. Her smile was contagious and her crisp blue eyes lit up every room she entered. To know Edna was to love her. Throughout her life she never knew a stranger. Her sweet, loving demeanor, warmth of spirit and ease of speaking won the hearts of many. 65 years ago Edna married the love of her life, Joseph A. Thomas. Their marriage was filled with much love, friendship and commitment and they quickly started their family. She supported, respected and loved her husband deeply. She loved being a military wife, moving from place to place around the country as their family grew, until finally settling back in Indianapolis when her husband went on reserve duty and started Law School. Edna delighted in and excelled at hosting the military parties and events as Joe rose in rank. She was a natural hostess and was able to make people feel comfortable with her welcoming hospitality and kind-hearted nature. She loved meeting new people and was quite the social bug. Edna was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Together she and Joe raised and nurtured 4 children, loved 9 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Edna was a stay at home mom until later in life when she began working in her youngest son's business. She loved interacting with all of the customers. Edna was preceded in death by her parents; her oldest son, Joseph A. Thomas, Jr.; her brother, Anthony J. Floyd; and 2 sisters, Maggie LeForge and Mary Jo Gillespie. Survivors include her husband, Joseph A. Thomas; her children, Robert P. Thomas (Shelly), Janet L. Morrison (Bryan) and Jeffrey A. Thomas (Kathy); 9 grandchildren, Adam, Jessica, Christopher, Jay, Andrew, Brett, Brad, Tyler and Kristen; 3 great grandchildren, Brenden West, Nolan Thomas and Remy Thomas; and her siblings, Christine Gough, Dottie Wilson, Cecelia Heady, James T. Floyd, Theresa Faulkner, Franky Belloise, Michael and Patrick Floyd. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 25, 2014, at 10 a.m. in St. Jude Catholic Church. Visitation will be Monday from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. in the Daniel F. O'Riley Funeral Home where prayers will be said on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. prior to Mass.
