John W. Alexander, 90, of Huntsville and Big Cove passed away at his home Monday. He was born in Dyer, Tenn. His parents moved to Vardaman, Miss., when he was 2 years old. Mr. Alexander was a member of New Salem Baptist Church and was a loyal deacon for many years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse Lee Alexander and Reggie Hortence Wimberly Williams Alexander; his first wife, Lavada Dennis Alexander; three brothers, Ralph M. Williams, James F. Williams and Richmon Alexander; and two sisters, Hazel Williams Dye and Helen Louise Hollingsworth.
He is survived by his wife, Johnye Ruth Hatchett Alexander; three sons, Bob Alexander and his wife, D.J., Terry Alexander and Johnny Alexander and his wife, Debbie; two stepsons, H. Mickey Drake and his wife, Debbie, and Gary L. Drake; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; several stepgrandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Alexander at a young age served in Civilian Conservation Corps from Aug. 15, 1935, to March 31, 1939, under the War Department at Co 5402 CCC and Co. 3486 CCC, Huntsville. Mr. Alexander was an excellent "field leader." The project superintendent, Mr. Robert W. Challen said "He was one of the best leaders he had the privilege to work with," he was honest, capable of handling his men, an excellent carpenter and he would recommend him for any kind of manual work. He served as a foreman while building the cabins on Monte Sano. He was a perfectionist in all his endeavors. Later he became a general contractor, having his own business until retirement.
Visitation will be from 5:30 to 8 p.m. today at Twickenham Funeral Home East. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Twickenham Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Brian Alexander, Scott Alexander, Michael Alexander, Brad Alexander, Dwight Hollingsworth, Louis Williams, Kenneth Alexander, Billy Alexander, Larry Alexander and Jerry Dennis. Honorary pallbearers will be the deacons of New Salem Baptist Church, Olin Dennis, Joe Junkins, Paul Eckley and Terrel Nelson. The Revs. Richard Anderson, Mike Shaneyfelt and Billy McElyea will officiate. Special thanks to Southern Care Hospice. Flowers or donations to the Alzheimer Foundation will be accepted.
