She was born Aug. 2, 1912, to Ellen Carlile Siron and Jared Hull Siron in Pleasanton. She graduated from Pleasanton High School in 1930.
After high school she attended normal school training at Emporia State Teachers College and then returned to rural Linn County, where she taught school in a one-room schoolhouse. On Aug. 21, 1941, she married Carl Frederick Gump in Fulton, KS. They met while attending classes at Pittsburg State College where she received her bachelor's degree.
They lived in Elk City, KS, before Carl's induction into the US Army during World War II. In 1946, they moved to Paola, where they both taught school. After the birth of their daughter, Carla, she became a full-time mother and homemaker.
She was a member of the Paola United Methodist Church for more than 50 years and was active in the United Methodist Women.
She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Just Us Neighbors Club. She loved to work in the yard with her flowers and vegetable garden. She and Carl also spent many hours on his family farm tending the trees they planted. She liked to travel and would keep a diary of her trips.
She was a wonderful seamstress and made many of her own clothes. She also enjoyed quilting and cooking, especially baking pies and cookies. She was a very loving woman who was always more concerned about doing for others than doing for herself.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Carl.
She is survived by her daughter, Carla Hanson of Omaha, and a brother, Kay Siron of Raytown, MO.
Services were Tuesday at Paola United Methodist Church, 209 South Silver Street, Paola, KS. Arrangements were by Penwell-Gabel Paola Chapel, 305 North Pearl St., Paola, KS 66071, 294-2372.
