80-year-old Mt. Vernon, IL resident, Frank D. Mayberry died Wednesday, Sept. 10 at St. Louis University Hospital. A veteran of the Vietnam War, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U. S. Air Force in 1956 and became a jet fighter pilot. He later retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1980. During his military service, he received numerous service commendations including the Distinguished Flying Cross, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal with five Oak Leaf Clusters and Air Force Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters. A graduate of McLeansboro Township High School in 1952, he graduated from Southern Illinois University with a Bachelor of science Degree in Industrial Engineering in 1956.

Survivors include his wife Phyllis Mayberry of Mt. Vernon; two sons, Bradley Mayberry and wife Hilda of Vienna, VA and Brent Mayberry and wife Mary of San Antonio, TX; a daughter, Kathryn Williams and husband James of Lusby, MD; two brothers, Joseph and Edward Mayberry of McLeansboro; and grandchildren, Ashley, Brent, Jr., Jamie, Sarah, Janele, Jonathon, Lanay and Rachel and ten great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Frank D. Mayberry will be 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 19 at St. Mary Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Mt. Vernon, IL with an internment of ashes at a later date. Military rites will be accorded following the funeral mass.
