The son of Michael & Catherine (Mumper) Bender, in 1860 he was a laborer living in Hamilton Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 9" tall and had black hair and dark eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of eighteen in Chambersburg February 6, 1864, mustered into federal service there February 10 as a private with Co. L, 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry (182nd Pennsylvania), and honorably discharged with his company July 8, 1865.

He married Laura L. Poole and was widowed by 1900. In 1890 and 1900, he was living in Antrim Township, Franklin County, but died in Guilford Township from "chronic cystitis."
